places in Nalanda

Nalanda was initially a village by a major trade route that ran through the nearby city of Rajagriha (which was then the capital of Magadha), now a days Rajagriha is called as Rajgir.

Nalanda is located at the south east of Patna which is about 95 km from it. There are in past there are large no of teaching institutions such as Taxila, Nalanda, and Vikramashila. At its peak, the school attracted scholars and students from near and far with some travelling all the way from Tibet, China Korea and Central Asia.

Another name of Great stupa is ‘Stupa of Sariputra’ This is one of the famous stupa in Nalanda which was made by Samrat Ashoka in the memory of Sariputra. Sariputra is the follower of Mahatma Buddha. This stupa is a pyramid shape and also it shows the flanked structure of flights of steps and sculptures.
