Wayanad got its name from the word Vayal Nadu. Here Vayal signifies "Paddy fields" and Nadu signifies “land”. Totally it is the land of paddy fields. It is a district with headquarters at Kalpetta, is the 12th district in Kerala that was formed on November 1st 1980 by cutting out the areas from Kozhikode and Kannur districts. Formerly this place was called as Africa in Kerala state, because of its largest tribal population.
