Sabarmati was one of the major historical places present in the state of Gujarat. This Ashram was present in the Sabarmati near the Ahmedabad, on the banks of the River Sabarmati. It was also called by the different names known as Harijan Ashram, Satyagraha Ashram and Gandhi Ashram.
This was the ashram where the “Father of Indian Nation” Gandhi lived here. This was the place where the Dandi March or Salt Satyagraha led by Gandhiji on 12 March 1930. Ashram was firstly created by the Jivanlal Desai, a barrister and friend of Gandhi and founded on 25 May 1915 at place of Kocharab Bungalow. Firstly this was called as Satyagraha Ashram. It was said that the Ashram site was once the place where Dadhichi Rishi who donated his bones for the war. But his main ashram was present near the Lucknow. It was believed that this ashram was present near the jail and crematorium. Gandhi said to the people that this was the correct place to start their freedom revolt activities against the British.
This Ashram was now converted into the Museum as the Gandhi Smarak Sangrahalaya. This Ashram was designed by the architect Charles Correa and a museum was built by him in the year 1963. The New building was inaugurated by the Jawaharlal Nehru on 10 May 1963. There were also some of the different buildings were present here are Vinoba Kutir, Magan Niwas, Nandini and the upasana Mandir.
This Museum consists of the several things which were used by the Gandhi. Some of them which includes here are Charkhas, Gandhi chappal, Spectacles and different artifacts which were used by him.
