Sri Vasavi Kanyaka Parameswari Temple is situated in Penugonda, a small town in West Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh. It is the birth place of Goddess Sri Vasavi Kanyaka Parameswari. This place is considered as a holy place for Arya Vysya community.
This temple finds place in various ancient religious texts. According to a legend, Vasavi Kanyaka Parameswari was very famous for her beauty. The holy temple manifests triple deities namely Sri Nagareswaraswamy, Sri Vasavi Kannika Parameshwari and Sri Mahishasuramardini.
The temple is constructed in strict accordance with Vastu Sastra. Prakaras, tall Gopuras, big courtyards, numerous mini-shrines, massive garba-grihas and glorious mukhamandapas make this temple picturesquely perfect. The temple faces east and a tall tower surmounting over the broad Mahadwara welcomes the visitors with its exquisite sculptural pieces adoring it from top to bottom and on all four sides too. There is also a massive courtyard with several buildings housing the office room and quarters for the staff. In the second Prakara, there are many mandamus adorned with holy deities, like Vinayaka, Bali, Navagrahas, besides the uniquely made colorful statues of Sri Vasavi Kanyaka Parameswari standing in fire -pit with parents by her side.
The garbha griha of Nagareswaraswamy is quite colossal. The elevated width for the lingam in the center is perfectly planned and superbly executed. The striking ling installed on a broad, high pedestal decorated with colorful garlands and the triple lines engraved with diamonds are so captivating that the devotees raise their hands in reverence the moment it gleams into their sight. And it feels like transported to Kailas for a while. Its size and sheen are its plus points. The other two garbha grihas are Mahishasuramardhini and Vasavamba. They are grand in size with the icons beautified with dazzling jewels and colorful outfit which spellbind the adorers. A single darshan leaves unforgettable impression on the minds of the devotees and make them visit this holy abode again and again.
